A Victorian house, converted into apartments in the 1930s, was in a serious state of disrepair with collapsing floors, a series of previous renovations and rooms in inappropriate places. My clients had bought the ground floor, three-bedroomed apartment partly because of its large, high-ceilinged rooms as well as the access it had to the garden and its unique cellar.
Some key points about the work we did:
• We regularly emailed the clients, who were living overseas, 3-D drawings of the work we were proposing so they had a clear idea of what we were hoping to achieve.
• Door heights throughout the apartment were all different – we raised them all to 2.5 metres, which was more in keeping with ceiling heights.
• We employed a sailmaker to make a large sail to provide shelter to the courtyard area.
• We worked with the clients to hang their art collection, using the lighting designer from the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale to design artwork lighting.
