    Bellevue Hill House

The Arts and Crafts house, built in 1905 but unsympathetically renovated during the 1960s, is the second house we have worked on for this client. While Collins and Turner designed a contemporary addition, our job was to renovate and furnish the original house.

    Some aspects of the job

    • There was an archaeological aspect to our work, as we stripped back 1960s additions to reveal original details. For instance, ceilings had been lowered – underneath, we found beams and shiplap timber which we used as part of the language of the renovations.

    • We added another floor within the very complicated roof space, and designed a replica staircase to access it.

    • We amalgamated a warren of small rooms to form a contemporary kitchen and breakfast room, reusing joinery from the original butler’s pantry. As much as possible, we maintained original elements.
