The owners of this late Victorian house, with a newer extension with replica Victoriana detailing, initially just wanted us to fix their study. Over six or seven years, we gradually refurbished or completely renovated every room in the house, including switching rooms to make use of the northern light.
Elements of the project
• In terms of the interiors, we decided to delineate the old and new parts of the house – the original part is very eclectic, while the newer extension is distinctly contemporary. References between the two help make it cohesive – for instance, the two red lacquer PK8 chairs in the new addition link back to the Chinoiserie Liberty chair in the old part of the house.
• The media room was an awkward shape, difficult to furnish and uncomfortable to be in. To solve that, we constructed a wraparound ceiling that incorporates cabinetry – the resulting room is much cosier and more enclosed.
• Originally, the view from the front door was into the back wall of the kitchen – by reconfiguring the kitchen, the view is now through the glass back doors and out in the garden.
• We reconstructed linen cupboard doors, inserting mesh into the frames for ventilation, and lining the mesh with apple green silk. This gives an interesting look and is of the period.
